For many american kids, Mother's Day means geting up early to prepare breakfast in bed for Mom, perhaps with a bud vase of roses on side. But for 25 or so sleepy boys and girls in Los Angeles, the day starts in a very differnt way.

A program created to fulfill the needs of children whose parents are in prison comes to the Central Coast. It's called, "Get On The Bus."
It was not your typical Father's Day celebration. This one was under the watchful eye of California Men's Colony correctional officers. But it was nevertheless a rare moment where families who have been separated by life's circumstances are reunited.
Prisoners at CMC get a rare escape from life behind bars, thanks to a program called Get On The Bus. It started 10 years ago at one prison and is now a statewide operation that involves more than 1,000 kids.

Volunteers from the University of San Diego will help make a ‘mother’s day’ special for some area children and their incarcerated mothers. Delayed this year because of the H1N1 virus alert in May, the annual Get On The Bus program is made possible through the Center for Restorative Justice Works and the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. The trip was originally set to take place on Mother’s Day.
More than 30 children will depart from USD this Friday en route to the California Institution for Women in Corona. The program, started 10 years ago, also reunites children and fathers who are behind bars. This week, buses filled with more than 700 children and their caregivers will travel from major cities across California to one of three female institutions: California Institution for Women in Corona, Central California Women’s Facility and Valley State Prison for Women, both in Chowchilla.

REDLANDS - Mother's day may have passed, but thanks to the dedication of a group of volunteers, the day will still be celebrated between mothers and their children.
Get On The Bus began 10 years ago to reunite parents and children for occasions, including Mother's and Father's day. But this year, because of a visitation suspension in the prison system because of the swine flu, there was no Mother's Day trip.
That will not stop more than 1,000 children from riding buses to five correctional facilities throughout the state for a belated Mother's Day. On Friday, a bus will depart from Redlands United Church of Christ.

Something as simple as spending time with dad on Father's Day isn't easy for California kids who have a father in prison. So a group of volunteers buses hundreds of families to correctional facilities around the state on Father's Day weekend.
